Vineyard of the Future

The Challenge:

Australia’s $45 billion wine industry, supported by more than 6,000 grape growers, is grappling with increased input costs and a shortage of skilled-workers.

At the same time there’s growing market and regulatory pressure to be able to demonstrate Australian wine is grown sustainability.

The Solution:

The Vineyard of the Future on the Global Digital Farm at Charles Sturt in Wagga Wagga will test, validate and develop new technology and data management platforms to improve efficiency and productivity, thereby ensuring the industry remains globally competitive.

A soil accounting tool for vineyards will be developed so grape growers can measure the benefits of sustainable vineyard practices and any carbon capture insets or gains.

A new pilot data hub platform will be created to allow the seamless integration of several wine industry data sources into one interface, with a decision support tool for investment, operation and research outcomes.

This will also allow for verifiable and certifiable sustainability data to be captured and communicated.

Outcomes:

  • A world class test bed, demonstration site and teaching facility for agtech solutions for the wine industry
  • Provide an economically viable and recognised soil carbon accounting system for vineyards in Australia
  • A Data Hub Platform that can ingest data from a multitude of varied sources and provide users with actionable insights
